Tong Tong Festival

OVERVIEW

The 56th Tong Tong Fair – the best mix of East and West

The 56th Tong Tong Fair will take place at Malieveld from 22 May – 2nd June 2014. By hosting the event, The Hague will be the venue for the largest Eurasian (Indonesian) festival in the world. In 1959 the Tong Tong Fair introduced the Netherlands to its irresistible, great atmosphere by mixing commercial, cultural and culinary activities. The Tong Tong Fair is not a fan of compartmentalization, largely thanks to its mixed roots: the Indonesian culture is a centuries-old fusion of East and West.

The theatres present a kaleidoscopic crossover of East and West through music, dance and literature. Lovers of world music: meet the Balinese top guitarist Balawan (jazz meets gamelan), Carel Kraayenhof & Sang Penari (tango meets Java & Bali), Indonesia’s most famous Krontjong singer Waldjinah (East meets West) and Boi Akih, Erwin van Ligten & Astrid Seriese, and many others. Literature lovers: meet Marion Bloem (‘No ordinary Indonesian girl’ for 30 years), Tan Twan Eng from Malaysia (shortlist Man Booker Prize 2012, winnder of the Man Asian Literary Prize 2013), Laksmi Pamuntjak from Indonesia, and many others.

Discover why the Tong Tong Fair is included in the Rough Guide to World Music and why the event received the Grand Prix of National Event Prizes, the Oscar of the Dutch events industry.

The Tong Tong Fair and the Tong Tong Festival are held at Malieveld in the centre of The Hague (Koningskade 1, 2596 AA The Hague), which is five minutes’ walk from The Hague Central Station. It takes 30 minutes to reach The Hague from Schiphol Airport by train or car, and two hours from Brussels.

Most people who visit the Netherlands only make it to Amsterdam, on their first visit at least. Amsterdam is brilliant fun - it has the iconic canals and the tourist-friendly red light district for starters. But visiting capital cities is not the truest way to experience a country, and The Hague ('Den Haag' in Dutch)...
